For a while now we have heard rumors that Amazon is working on their own Kindle-Fire style Android smartphone. Today's new rumor suggests they are not working on one, but actually two different versions. Additionally, the second version will supposedly offer a glasses-free 3D display experience. Their new technology supposedly uses an eye-tracking camera to dynamically adjust the image so you have a 3D display from every viewing angle.
This rumor comes as part of a package. Apparently, Amazon is actually working on a series of new products with the codename the “Alphabet Project.” Despite this sounding like something out of a Saturday Morning School House Rock skit, it sounds fairly intriguing. Supposedly they have a number of devices corresponding with letters of the Alphabet, like Project A, Project, B, Project C, etc. Each letter represents a different project, and supposedly, besides the two Android phones they are working, Amazon is also planning some other stuff, including an audio-only streaming device and a set-top box of some kind. According to the source of this intel, these projects will likely launch sometime this year.
What do you guys think of this 3D Phone idea? Isn't this a concept that already died with the HTC EVO 4G LTE & the LG Optimus 3D?

If this latest intel is true, it means the Amazon Kindle Fire smartphone is likely closer to fruition. Supposedly, Amazon already purchased a Siri-like voice assistant app called EVI for $26 Million dollars from a British startup. Here's a quote with soem additional detail,
Evi had a controversial birth, being threatened with being pulled from the Apple App store for being too similar to Siri, then being allowed to stay.
Will Amazon combine Evi with the voice recognition company they bought in January called Ivona? It’s hard to say. But smart observers might speculate that all these moves point towards Amazon developing a mobile handset/smartphone.
But the evidence that Amazon purchased Evi late last year is incontrovertible.
At UK Companies House all the Evi Technologies Ltd directors have been replaced by Amazon’s UK legal representative, and this is confirmed by the Octopus Ventures annual report. The annual reports of all Octopus Ventuers’ funds all refer to the disposing of their shares in Evi Technologies.
Companies House records show all directors at Evi have been replaced and loans paid off, while a small loss of £19,000 was recognised.
The new Company Secretary for Evi Technologies is also Amazon’s: Mitre Secretaries Ltd are the corporate secretary for Amazon.co.uk (and Amazon’s London software development company).
Evi is an iOS and Android app and runs on any Android or iPhone. The app couples Nuance’s voice recognition technology and True Knowledge’s search engine.
The evidence supporting this theory certainly looks compelling. Perhaps sometime this year we will finally see the Kindle Fire Phone?

Folks who own the newer versions of Amazon Kindle Fire products will be happy to know that some software updates have started pushing out OTA. The 2nd Generation Kindle Fire and the Kindle Fire HD 7-inch & 8.9-inch devices are all getting the updates. Here's a quote with more of the details,
For each device, the update provides enhancements for viewing textbooks, with the 2nd generation Fire and the Fire HD 7" getting "X-Ray for Textbooks". This feature allows users to access the most important terms and concepts, with glossary definitions and links to relevant pages within books.
The update also provides enhancements for print replica textbooks across each device. Thumbnails of each page are now available at the bottom of the screen, and you can make notes and highlights in your books, as well as jump from one chapter to another.
Other improvements include "Time To Read", which calculates how much longer you have left until completing a book based on your reading speed, and each device can now read books with audio and video clips, too.
The update will be downloaded to devices automatically, but if you want to force the update to happen more quickly, you can initiate it from your Kindle and get it straight away.
These are great new features that Amazon added to their product lineup. It's great to see the company continuing to support their device by making it do new and useful things. Sound off if you have received this update and tell us what you think of it.

Amazon just shared they have expanded their X-Ray for Movies app. It now works for TV shows as well. Here's the full press release,
Amazon Expands X-Ray to TV, Powered by IMDb and Available on the Kindle Fire Family
Six months ago, Amazon and IMDb introduced “X-Ray for Movies,” a new feature that revolutionized the movie viewing experience by bringing the power of IMDb directly to movies on Kindle Fire HD. With a single tap viewers can discover the names of the actors appearing on the screen and what they’ve been in. Today, Amazon announced that it is expanding X-Ray to TV, bringing the seamless, fully-integrated X-Ray experience to TV shows. Available today for the most popular TV shows on Amazon, X-Ray will quickly expand to even more shows. IMDb, an Amazon company for 14 years, is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content, with more than 160 million monthly unique visitors worldwide. X-Ray for TV is also available as part of the free Amazon Instant Video app on Wii U.
“X-Ray has been one of the most loved features on Kindle Fire HD since it launched last September,” said Peter Larsen, Vice President, Amazon Kindle. “For people who are passionate about movies and TV, there is no better way to watch than on Kindle Fire HD, which combines an exceptional viewing experience with the unbelievable power of the over 100 million pieces of data in IMDb’s catalog.”
“For over 20 years we have been cultivating a vast database of movie, TV and celebrity content,” said Col Needham, IMDb Founder and CEO. “Can’t remember where you’ve seen the actor playing Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey? No problem. Simply tap on the screen and you’ll see a full filmography, where you’ll realize that Hugh Bonneville was also in Notting Hill. Our vision is to make X-Ray available on every movie and TV show-we’re excited to make another big step forward today, and we are working hard to add X-Ray to more TV shows and movies in the future.”
X-Ray for TV is available starting today on the most popular TV shows from Amazon Instant Video, many of which are also available as part of Prime Instant Video: Justified, Downton Abbey, The West Wing, Sons of Anarchy, Falling Skies, American Horror Story, Grey’s Anatomy, Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, Lost, Glee, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.
Amazon Instant Video offers customers the ability to rent, purchase or subscribe to a huge catalog of videos. Customers can choose from more than 150,000 titles to purchase or rent and content ranges from new release movies to classic favorites, major television shows, entire seasons, or even day after air TV. Prime Instant Video is Amazon’s video subscription offer-it includes more than 38,000 movies and TV episodes selected from the full assortment available at Amazon Instant Video.
