Tablets may not be the only new industry that Amazon pushes into. According to some new rumors from sources at Bloomberg, Amazon may actually be prepping an Amazon smartphone too. Supposedly Foxconn is already working with Amazon on this mythical device. Additionally, Amazon is planning ahead for any patent war shenanigans before jumping into this fray. They plan to complement their smartphone strategy by acquiring patents that cover wireless technology that will help in any potential defense.
There is no word on what type of operating system would be installed on the device, but it could be a heavily doctored up version of Android just like with the Kindle Fire. What do you guys think? Could Amazon be as competitive in the smartphone market as they have been in the tablet market?
I could see it happening. If they went after those that a smartphone is too much but a basic dumbphone is too little they could grab a user base that has few if any choices right now.
The question would be whose signal their phone would use. If they did a Straight Talk or Boost type of plan (no contract but good signal) and carrier it would be much better than being enslaved to a contract on one of the big carriers. I don't know about ATT and Sprint but I really don't see Verizon adding another line of devices void of their bloatware and I don't see Amazon giving up potential profits on their end to allow Verizon to put in their bloatware.
I do appreciate that Amazon seems to be taking steps to head off Apple and the obvious suits they will surely file claiming rights to everything including the rectangular shape of a phone like they did to Samsung,HTC, etc
