Just to be sure I understand what you're saying...You are using your KF. You plug it in to the power cable supplied by Amazon connected to the wall outlet. It "shuts off." Correct? What does "shut off" mean? The screen goes black? You cannot turn it on again by pushing the power button?
Mine is the opposite. I power it off, plug it in, it powers up.
As a matter of fact, Sunday night I plugged it in and it didn't start to charge so I unplugged it, powered it down and plugged it back in and it powered up and began charging.

I just bought 2 Fires, 1 for my wife and 1 for me.
I read in the Kindle Fire Forums on Amazon to charge it for a minimum of 4 hours or better yet over night before using.
First, is it o.k. to let them sit on the charger after it's charged (I guess they're charged, the light was yellow, not green on both)
For future reference, it is o.k. to use the Fire while it's charging or better to just let it charge unused?
Thanks
Welcome to the forum.
Yes to both questions.
If you want to learn a little more about how the battery and charger. works on your Fire check out this link

It's pretty much standard for most portable devices now.
