Once its rooted, its rooted until you unroot it. There is no switching and the only difference you will notice is the superuser app.

I rooted mine the same say I got it. Used it for about a day and decided I didn't really NEED all of those features. I have everything I need on my phone. I did, however, side load some apps.

That's how I feel, as well. At first, I wanted the Fire to be loaded with everything that my smartphone is loaded with. Then I realized that I don't need every device I own be able to do EVERYTHING. Now I'm just loading apps that benefit from the larger screen; I can do everything else with my DInc 2, which I take everywhere I go, anyway.

Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper app allows switching on the fly. Will not necessarily protect you from losing root due to firmware updates, but Burrito is there for that. That allows you to use Amazon VoD by temporarily unrooting. I generally leave it unrooted except for backups as rooting it allows me to install and run special apps that are mostly for maintenance (in my case).

Ginger Unroot will remove all evidence of the device having been rooted in case you need to send it in for maintenance or repair and are concerned about a warranty violation.
