That is a very difficult question to answer. The only way you could get a objective answer is if you can find someone who has owned and used both at the same time. The way I look at it is if you want a content device the HD has a edge in some areas and if you want more of a tablet use device the ipad has a edge. I also believe that most people would be happy with either, and as the Fire is much more economical it would be my choice. But then there are other tablets that are better in some areas and as affordable as the HD. For myself I am happy with the Fire Original I purchased some eight months ago. I am sure there is another tablet in my future; just not right now. fdalbor

Using both right now with the plan to transition to the HD.

Quite a few of my apps on the iPad don't work on the HD. One being the HP e-printer app. The app is in the Kindle store, but you can't print from it. Other apps, Dropbox for example, isn't in the Kindle store. Have to get the apk for it and load it that way.

The biggest disappointment is not being able to access the Google Play store for apps. I can Root the HD, but ask myself why.

Should have put an on/off button on it that wasn't flush mounted.

The jury is out on which one I keep, but right now I'd say the iPad has the edge.

Really miss being able to snap a pic and do screen capture.

Why can't you take a pic?
Screen capture-- press minus-volume/on-off keys at the same time......
takes some practice to get it without the volume bar.

Thank you John for the insights. After having a Fire for the past eight months I really don't fine the absence of the play store a hinderence. There are so many other app stores to choose from (Amazon, 1Market, Getjar, Handango, Pixelscroll, etc). And it really is not difficult to get apps from the Play Store. It just takes a little more effort than the others.

I will probably change my mind and get an HD in the near future. The app situation (at least to me) is a lot of overkill. There are more apps out there that the typical tablet user can use in a hundred years. In fact my biggest problem when deciding what app to add next is wading throught the the mass of them out there to find something you really want or need.

One of the nice things I really like about the Fire's is the fact that Amazon lets you store all your apps purchased (or free) from them in the cloud. While I only have 37 apps on my fire I use most of the time, I have about 50 more stored in the cloud to be downloaded if I want to use them. fdalbor

I would not worry about missing the screen capture key strokes on the HD John. I have been having my original Fire for eight months and almost every day I find something it can do that I didn't know it could do. And I must have at least seven books or more on using the Kindle Fire. I plan on adding a HD soon so the learning process will have to start all over. Good luck, fdalbor

Re: Is the kindle fire hd better then the ipad?

I'm finding that part of the fun of the Kindle is finding the stuff:banghead:.
This being my first foray into the tablet world it has been somewhat
frustrating, at first....but now it has become fun.

I'm finding apps that are toys and ones that make this a tool.

Just like learning how to use Tapatalk. Didn't look like the browser I'm
used to.....but now I like it.
