Was Steve Jobs Wrong About 7-inch Tablets?

During an Apple earnings call in October, 2010, Steve Jobs said:

"7-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone and too small to compete with the iPad...These are among the reasons that the current crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be DOA dead on arrival."

It looks as if the Kindle Fire may prove him wrong. I must admit that I had concerns about a 7-inch tablet. My wife and I are in our 70s and our eyesight isn't what it once was, but we are very happy with our Kindle Fire. We have no trouble viewing the screen and I find that I can use the on-screen keyboard as long as I use it in a landscape orientation.

Steve believed what he believed in spite of the facts sometimes but it is why Apple exists. The facts said it would never work but.......

I think some people like to be told what to think and some people love to tell people what to think.

I find seven inch screens work well for me and because of that Steven was wrong.
It's not about numbers, it is about people having different needs.
    I know what I need / want.

Fact. While the man had great vision, he never invented anything in his life.

Stevie was stuck on the 4:3 screen ratio, and a 7" tablet at 4:3 would have still been too wide to fit most pockets. You can bet they tested several sizes, and ended up with the current size as a compromise between cost and usability given that no practical 4:3 tablet was going to be easily pocket/portable. The Fire, as well as most other 7" tablet are 16:10 or 16:9 and easily fit jacket pockets or even men's pants pockets. As much as half the weight of an iPad they are easier to hold for long periods and as such make better e-readers. With multi-touch to zoom in/out of web pages and book pages the software makes big OR smaller screens useful, even for aging eyes.

The biggest thing I've seen with Apple is if they don't think you need it and you think you do, they will say you are wrong and antiquated as well as if you have a problem with your device that they don't agree with or want to acknowledge, it doesn't exist. Only Apple and the developers of Swype have their heads stuck so far in the sand, up their butts, however you want to phrase it.

    Man you guys are cold.

First, Steve Jobs' name is on 317 patents. So to say he never invented anything is a little off the mark.

He invented some amazing products that just can't be touched.

That being said, I like the 7 inch size of the Fire because I can hold it in one hand. The iPad is a little too unwieldy.
