I ordered 2 Kindle Fire HD 8.9 4Gs for my daughters for Christmas. I have looked all over the internet and cannot seem to find the answer to one question. Can you write documents on it? Like with Open Office or some other software. My oldest daughter loves to write short stories. The Fire does everything else they want (music, movies, games, internet) and is portable. So I didn't want to buy a full laptop just for media consumption and chatting with friends on facebook. But the open extra thing they need is to write documents. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Welcome to the forum.
Yes there are apps available for writing documents but they are paid apps with free trial versions. The free trials all have limited abilities, most allow reading only, but any of them will give you somewhat of an idea of how nicely they play with your Windows machines. Office Suite , Documents to Go and Quick Office are the most popular. My personal favorite is Quick Office.

Thank you for the info. I was looking at BT keyboards for the Fires and was really hoping they could write on them.

I use a bluetooth keyboard on my Galaxy Tab with Quick Office and for writing longer worded tasks like emails. It's very nice vs a touch screen. It's a Logitech.
I'm not familiar with any for the Fire lineup.

one more question, if you don't mind. Since I can't seem to just go look at the app store to see whats there, are there any apps the work similar to Power point?
Thanx again for the help, it was a relief to know she can use it for writing. She is autistic and this is a big deal for her, she loves writing.

Yes. Quickpoint inside of Quick Office does a PowerPoint 2003,2007 or 2010
Awesome! Thank you so much for the info. She is going to love this. And I am looking forward to playing with it too. For myself, I ordered a Surface, but I think the Fire is going to be perfect for them.
