Make sure you scroll down, I made a post there that has the file you will need.
You don't need to be rooted. Follow directions and you can use google play and most google apps, except the store

didn't work for me. I download the apk file and gmail still didn't work.

If you're interested solely in accessing gmail on the KF, consider downloading the K-9 email client app from the Amazon Appstore and pointing it at your gmail account. It provides a number of features (including folder control) that are missing in the standard email app.
